UK Home Secretary raises residency wait to 10 years, adds fast-track for care workers
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the standard residency requirement for indefinite leave to remain will rise from five to ten years, with a fast-track route allowing care workers earning over £25,000 and other high-earning public-service staff to qualify after five years, while refugees arriving by small boats could be required to wait up to thirty years. Mahmood had earlier said she would revise settlement rules after criticism from Labour MPs and dissent within the cabinet.
She then outlined adjustments that kept stricter timelines for most migrant groups but introduced a five-year pathway for care workers earning above the threshold. The policy shift follows a decline in net migration and internal party debate.
