Polish president accuses PM Tusk of constitutional court takeover
President Karol Nawrocki accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk on 31 October of staging a forced takeover of Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal after the court’s president was suspended, saying the move amounted to a coup. Earlier, on 29 October police entered the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw and suspended its president Bogdan Święczkowski, prompting the president to abort his flight to Senegal and return to the capital, according to Reuters. The Kyiv Independent reported that the president cut short his Senegal trip amid the intensifying dispute over the tribunal’s leadership.
Politico. eu noted that judges had barred themselves from hearing cases and suspended both the tribunal’s president and deputy, fueling protests and accusations of a coup. NDTV said the suspension sparked barricades and demonstrations in Warsaw, while Euronews highlighted that the president had refused to accept the oaths of several appointed judges, deepening the institutional clash.
