Metrolinx Sub-contractor Driver Charged in Fatal Toronto Traffic-Agent Collision

Resumen

A 33-year-old driver employed by a Metrolinx subcontractor has been charged with careless driving causing death after a dump truck struck a traffic agent in Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood.

Toronto police charged a 33-year-old driver from Brampton with careless driving causing death after a Kenworth dump truck hit a 44-year-old traffic agent at the Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard intersection on Thursday morning. The agent died at the scene despite life-saving measures.

Police identified the driver as a third-party contractor working for Metrolinx, the agency overseeing the Ontario Line construction in the area. Councillor Rachel Chernos Lin, who represents the ward, said her office had repeatedly raised concerns about truck traffic and safety around the project and called for an urgent review of safety measures at the intersection.

“It is imperative that we understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. We will be pushing for an urgent review of what additional measures can be implemented to improve safety at this and other nearby intersections.”

Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said his ministry is cooperating with police and that the incident will be reviewed to determine any needed policy changes.

“This is an absolutely unfortunate incident, but we would absolutely review this and implement any further policies and procedures that would mitigate against any future incidents such as this.”

The crash follows a February 2025 incident in which another Metrolinx-linked dump truck seriously injured a pedestrian near Pape Avenue and Mortimer Avenue, prompting calls for a safety review. Councillor Paula Fletcher, whose ward includes the earlier site, criticized the agency’s driver-safety protocols and urged stricter standards.

“[Metrolinx is] supposed to advise every driver that leaves every yard what the safety protocols are every day… I think those safety standards have been relaxed and they need to be tightened up so this never happens again.”

A Metrolinx spokesperson expressed sympathy for those affected and said further updates will be provided in coordination with Toronto Police Services.
