Opposition Holds Symbolic Impeachment of India's Chief Election Commissioner
The opposition INDIA bloc held a symbolic impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on November 1, accusing him of facilitating vote theft in the 2024 elections and demanding his removal and imprisonment. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, made these accusations during a rally, emphasizing electoral irregularities. The event was initially planned for October 23 but was postponed due to heavy rain and venue denials. The opposition coalition, led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, organized a public impeachment session at Kharge's residence.
Dozens of political parties and civil society groups participated in this three-hour event, which was rebranded as a "People's Impeachment" to highlight the demand for accountability. The ruling BJP dismissed the opposition's actions as political theatrics, while the INDIA bloc maintained that the Chief Election Commissioner had compromised the integrity of the electoral process. The opposition's efforts reflect ongoing tensions over election administration in India.
