Big Tech Q3 Revenue Grows While Hyperscale Shares Enter Correction

Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta posted solid third-quarter revenue gains, but heavy AI spending and negative free cash flow have pushed their stock prices into correction territory.

Big technology companies reported strong revenue growth for the third quarter, yet shares of large-scale cloud providers have slipped into correction levels. Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta all posted year-over-year top-line increases, but analysts note that rising AI-related capital expenditures and negative free cash flow are raising concerns about future profitability and capital efficiency.

The author of the analysis, Daniel Martins, highlighted the risk that return on invested capital could fall as AI competition intensifies and borrowing costs stay high. He suggested that investors might consider a more defensive stance in the sector, favoring companies such as Apple and Microsoft that demonstrate tighter cash discipline, and diversify away from concentrated AI bets.

"I see risk that marginal ROIC may decline as AI competition intensifies and the cost of capital remains elevated, challenging value creation," Martins wrote.

The commentary also pointed out that despite the robust revenue numbers, market sentiment remains skeptical due to the elevated spending on AI infrastructure and the potential impact on earnings margins.
