Cleveland-Cliffs CEO hints at possible Stelco sale amid legal dispute
Cleveland-Cliffs chief Lourenço Gonçalves said on 27 October that the company may sell the Hamilton, Ontario steel plant within a year as the dispute with Industry Minister Mélanie Joly heads toward court action. Earlier, Cleveland-Cliffs told officials it was complying with its Investment Canada Act obligations after recent Stelco layoffs and asked Minister Joly for a meeting to discuss restoring jobs. Canadian federal data later showed that more than half of the country's galvanized and coated steel sheet imports in the first nine months of 2026 came from the United States, challenging the company's claim that cheap overseas steel was driving the layoffs.
