The Tamil Nadu police announced that all 17 inmates who escaped from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni district on Oct 26 were recaptured within 42 hours, and the BBC reported that nine prison guards were suspended pending investigation. According to The Hindu, the prisoners staged a fake epileptic seizure and assaulted staff, prompting a multi-district manhunt involving police from Madurai, Dindigul and Idukki. Initial reports said only one escapee had been arrested, later rising to four, before authorities confirmed the full recapture.

The Hindu also cited human error in security procedures. The BBC highlighted severe overcrowding at the facility.
