M2 Motorway Closed Both Ways After Collision Near Medway Services

Resumen

The M2 between junctions 4 and 5 has been shut in both directions following a serious collision, with police warning that the closure could last for an extended period.

The M2 motorway has remained closed in both directions between junction 4 (Gillingham) and junction 5 (Sittingbourne, Sheppey and Maidstone) after a serious collision near Medway Services. The incident, which occurred around 9:10 p.m. on October 27, prompted police to advise drivers to avoid the area.

"The M2 is closed in both directions between J4 and 5 following a serious collision coastbound near Medway Services. The motorway is expected to remain closed for a significant period of time and road users are advised to expect delays and find alternative routes if possible," Kent Police posted on Facebook.

National Highways also confirmed the closure on its X account, noting that the eastbound (coastbound) section is shut between junctions 3 and 5 and the westbound (London-bound) side is similarly affected. The agency warned that delays are likely and urged motorists to plan ahead.

Traffic monitoring firm Inrix reported extensive congestion as investigation work continues. Congestion stretches roughly two miles coastbound from junction 3 at Chatham and three miles westbound from Blue Bell Hill toward Maidstone, with additional queues on the A249 and A2 routes.

A driver in Sittingbourne described a queue extending back to Wicks, adding that it took about 30 minutes to travel half a mile.

Emergency services have been contacted for further details, and local radio station KMFM is providing ongoing traffic updates.
