Ontario launches free flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccinations for all residents

Resumen

Ontario will provide free flu, COVID-19 and RSV shots to anyone six months old and older starting Monday, with doses available at pharmacies, health units and participating clinics.

Ontario's provincial government announced that free flu, COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccinations will be offered to all residents aged six months and older beginning Monday. The shots can be obtained at selected pharmacies, public health units and participating doctors' or nurse practitioners' offices, and are open to anyone who lives, works or studies in the province.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones said the fall immunization program aims to protect people and communities, adding, "Working with our health-care partners, we are ensuring everyone has timely and convenient access to flu, COVID-19 and RSV immunizations close to home."

Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Kieran Moore encouraged the most vulnerable populations to get vaccinated, stating, "Staying up to date on recommended immunizations remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness, helping to keep our communities healthy, maximizing the impact of our public health programs and delivering greater value for Ontarians."

Initial vaccine supplies were allocated to high-risk groups, including hospitalized patients, health-care workers, long-term-care residents and people aged 65 and older. The government recommends that essential service workers, caregivers, breastfeeding women, household contacts of high-risk individuals and others in close-contact settings receive the flu shot first.

Toronto Public Health reported 337 influenza cases and 380 COVID-19 cases in the city between Aug. 30 and Oct. 21. The agency noted that respiratory viruses can cause severe illness, especially among seniors, immunocompromised individuals, infants and pregnant people, and that virus activity typically rises in the fall and winter.

The province advises that COVID-19 vaccines can be administered safely alongside flu or RSV shots. Symptoms of the three illnesses overlap and may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, headache, fatigue, sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain and gastrointestinal issues.

RSV vaccination is available to residents aged 60-74 who meet high-risk criteria or live in high-risk settings, all residents 75 and older, newborns and infants up to eight months in their first RSV season, and high-risk children up to 24 months in their second season. Pregnant women may also receive the RSV vaccine from their obstetrician, midwife or primary-care provider.
