Scott Gillingham Wins Second Term as Winnipeg Mayor, Council Turnover
Incumbent Scott Gillingham secured a second term as mayor of Winnipeg on 29 October, and seven new councillors entered the city council after two incumbents were defeated, CBC reported. The municipal election, held on 22 October, saw voters choose a mayor, city councillors and school trustees, with Global News noting that Gillingham and challenger Kevin Klein were the leading mayoral contenders. In the days before the vote, the candidates toured the city outlining tax, recreation and infrastructure plans, Winnipeg Free Press reported.
An Abacus Data poll released earlier that week showed 27-year-old software developer Noah Redden tied for third with 14% support while Gillingham led with 36%, Winnipeg Free Press said. Former mayor Glen Murray endorsed Redden, calling for renewed leadership, Winnipeg Free Press added. CBC observed a high turnout, with over 38,000 votes recorded by noon and a record number of advance voters.
