UK Business Secretary Calls for Caution on Deeper EU Integration
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds warned the United Kingdom should understand the EU’s future direction before deepening ties, as the cabinet debated the issue. The debate follows Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s call for an open discussion on restoring EU freedom of movement for workers, a stance supported by senior Labour ministers such as Housing Secretary Angela Rayner.
Burnham later criticised the current Brexit deal as inadequate but ruled out seeking a vote to re-enter the EU during the present parliamentary term, and he expressed a personal hope that Britain might re-join the EU in his lifetime, contingent on a public referendum. Government officials also indicated that the upcoming November EU summit would address trade, youth mobility and possible long-term relationship options, including free movement, while Labour frontbenchers warned that revisiting EU membership could alienate voters in former Leave constituencies.
