UK Prime Minister Burnham hopes for EU re-entry but rules out immediate action
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he hopes Britain will re-enter the European Union within his lifetime, but ruled out any attempt to do so during the current parliamentary term and stressed that a public referendum would be required. Earlier, he had criticised the existing Brexit deal as insufficient for the economy and immigration control, saying he would not seek a vote to re-join the EU in this Parliament. Burnham also called for an open debate on restoring EU freedom of movement for workers, a stance supported by senior Labour ministers including Housing Secretary Angela Rayner.
