King Charles III visits Guyana, marking 1823 Demerera slave rebellion
King Charles III visited Georgetown’s Independence Park in Guyana on 20 October, marking the 1823 Demerera slave rebellion, where he met schoolchildren and veterans while a small group of protesters called for reparations. The visit was reported on 30 October.
The stop was the second leg of a nine-day Caribbean tour that began with the monarch’s arrival in the Bahamas, where Commonwealth leaders and Caribbean officials pressed Britain for an apology and reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. Throughout the tour, the King said it was right to recognise past injustices, highlighted climate challenges for low-lying islands, and the Royal Household undertook extensive risk-management preparations amid growing republican sentiment in the region.
