Regional talks in Tehran amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions
Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish officials met Iranian security leaders in Tehran on October 26, seeking ways to reduce the risk of renewed fighting between Iran, the United States and Israel, according to NBC News. The meeting followed a series of escalating statements. In early October Iran’s armed forces warned it would target U. S. vessels near Iranian waters after President Donald Trump hinted at a new large-scale strike, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the U. S. Navy could not re-enter the Persian Gulf.
U. S. Central Command later disclosed that it had drafted strike options against Iranian targets pending Trump’s approval, while Iranian officials threatened to hit U. S. bases, regional civilian infrastructure and even consider nuclear options if a renewed U. S. -Israeli air campaign began.
