Protests Erupt Across Germany Amid Calls for Lower Living Costs
Protests led by the Gen Z initiative demanding lower living costs and better education erupted in over 30 cities across Germany on October 31, 2026, resulting in violent clashes and looting in cities such as Frankfurt and Cologne. Police intervened to control the unrest as rioters confronted law enforcement and damaged property. The demonstrations were initially called by the youth group "Gen Z regelt," which urged peaceful protests against school funding cuts, cost-of-living pressures, and climate issues.
Thousands participated in the rallies across Germany, also demanding the abolition of compulsory military service. While the daytime protests remained mostly peaceful, violence and looting occurred during the night in several cities, prompting warnings from the German Federal Police GdP union about extremist infiltration and stressing the importance of non-violence.
