California records unprecedented surge in rabid wildlife detections
California state health authorities reported a record number of rabid wildlife detections, the highest in nearly three decades, and urged residents to keep pets vaccinated. Earlier, Los Angeles County health officials confirmed a second rabid raccoon in Westlake Village and earlier this year documented a record 76 rabies-positive bats, prompting local advisories to avoid contact with wildlife. U.
S. health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also issued an advisory warning of increased rabies risk among wildlife, noting that no human cases had been confirmed.
