Norovirus Outbreak Hits Bentwood Elementary School with About 85 Cases
Health officials confirmed a norovirus outbreak at Bentwood Elementary in Overland Park, reporting roughly 85 cases and urging hygiene measures to curb further spread.
Health officials have confirmed a norovirus outbreak at Bentwood Elementary School in Overland Park, Kansas, after approximately 85 cases were reported over the past week. The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) said two cases were confirmed by laboratory testing, while the remaining cases are considered epidemiologically linked, indicating they occurred in the same setting at the same time.
JCDHE is working with school administrators to monitor the illness and implement preventive measures. Officials emphasized frequent handwashing with soap and water, thorough cleaning and disinfection of contaminated surfaces, and staying home when ill. They advised anyone diagnosed with norovirus to remain at home for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside.
In a letter to families, school officials noted that absentee rates were high early in the week due to similar symptoms, prompting coordination with JCDHE. Absenteeism has since declined. The school increased sanitation over the weekend, using daily cleaning and hospital-grade disinfectants effective against norovirus, with extra attention to high-touch areas. JCDHE will continue to monitor the situation and provide guidance as needed.
