An outbreak of norovirus at Bentwood Elementary School in Olathe, Kansas, affected 95 students and staff members and two family members, according to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment and Olathe Public Schools. The cases began in early October and were identified through laboratory testing for two individuals, while the others were linked epidemiologically based on similar symptoms and timing.
Symptoms reported included vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain, but no hospitalizations were recorded. Officials said no new cases have been reported since Oct. 13 and the outbreak is considered over.
"Throughout the outbreak, JCDHE worked closely with school officials to monitor illnesses, provide public health guidance and help prevent further spread," the joint statement read. "Although the outbreak is considered over, JCDHE and the Olathe Public Schools will continue to monitor the situation and work together to help protect the health of students, staff and families."
The department noted that norovirus is highly contagious and a leading cause of viral gastroenteritis in the United States, emphasizing hand washing with soap and water as the most effective preventive measure.
