Suspect claims accidental attack on MP Helen Haines after court hearing
Brendan Nugent, the man charged with dangerous driving and assaulting a public official, told a Melbourne court that the collision that left independent MP Helen Haines without both legs was accidental, the Brisbane Times reported. Haines remains in serious but stable condition. The incident occurred in Wangaratta, Victoria, when a Toyota Landcruiser rammed Haines twice outside her office; officials described it as intentional.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the attack deliberate and police arrested the driver. Haines subsequently underwent double leg amputation. In response, the government has launched an expedited review of parliamentary security measures and pledged enhanced protection for MPs.
