Australian MP Helen Haines critically injured after vehicle strike
Independent MP Helen Haines was seriously hurt when a SUV hit her outside her Wangaratta office; police have detained a suspect and a knife was found in the vehicle.
Independent federal MP Helen Haines, 65, is in critical condition after a Toyota Land Cruiser struck her outside her constituency office in Wangaratta, about 200 km northwest of Melbourne. Victoria police said a 43-year-old male driver was apprehended by bystanders and handed to authorities, and a knife was discovered in the vehicle.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the ABC that the incident was not accidental, describing it as a deliberate act and expressing sympathy for Haines, her family and community. He added that the motive remains unknown and that Australia’s counter-terrorism unit has been activated.
Police acting superintendent Ashley Mason confirmed the victim’s condition without naming her, in line with local practice. The incident follows a documented increase in threats toward Australian politicians, which Albanese said has heightened public discourse online.
Haines, who entered parliament in 2019 after a career as a nurse and midwife, is known for advocating stronger climate action and political transparency. Her family released a statement confirming the incident, thanking bystanders, health workers and police, and requesting privacy.
The investigation continues as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the vehicle-ramming.
