Driver accused of ramming MP Helen Haines twice arrested, authorities investigate

Resumen

Australian MP Helen Haines remains in critical condition after being struck by a car in Wangaratta; police say the driver reversed to hit her a second time and are assessing possible charges.

A 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee was arrested after he allegedly drove past independent MP Helen Haines, performed a U-turn and rammed her vehicle twice outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke told the ABC that witnesses described the driver doing a U-turn, hitting Haines against a parked car, reversing and striking her again.

Haines, 65, was taken by helicopter to a Melbourne hospital where she remains in critical condition following surgery. Police say there is no intelligence indicating a broader threat and are treating the case as an isolated incident. Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason appealed for any dash-cam footage or witnesses to contact investigators.

The Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police are working together to determine possible state and Commonwealth offences, including causing harm to a public official, which can carry up to ten years’ imprisonment, according to AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett. The investigation is being led by Victoria Police’s security investigation unit with support from the joint counter-terrorism team, the AFP and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the event as a deliberate act and said it would affect all Australians, not just members of parliament. Intelligence officials have warned that rising grievance, intolerance and polarisation are creating a permissive environment for politically motivated violence.

A local barber, Ricky Jefferies, was among by-standers who detained the driver at the scene. He said he found a knife in the suspect’s pocket and held him until police arrived. Albanese praised Jefferies as a hero.

A vigil is planned for Haines at Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in Wangaratta, with independent candidate Steve Manning urging community members to attend.
