California billionaire wealth tax campaign shows $351 million funding gap
The Los Angeles Times reported that opponents of Proposition 40 have raised more than $316 million, while supporters have collected about $34 million, leaving a $351 million spending gap in the costly California ballot campaign. Earlier reporting noted that Silicon Valley tech billionaires have contributed over $340 million and are spending more than $1 million each day to defeat the measure, which would impose a one-time 5 % wealth tax on roughly 200 California billionaires to generate $100 billion for health-care. A National Bureau of Economic Research paper cited by Fortune estimated the tax could raise about $30 billion but might ultimately cost the state around $39 billion due to billionaire out-migration.
