Analyst predicts SEC-Big Ten scheduling pact after CFP expands to 24 teams
Fox analyst Joel Klatt and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said the College Football Playoff’s planned expansion to 24 teams in 2027 is likely to spur a non-conference scheduling agreement between the SEC and the Big Ten. Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports reported that the playoff field is expected to double from 12 to 24 teams. Fox News noted that the NCAA outlined a “19+4+1” format slated to debut in 2027.
Yahoo Sports also said college football leaders reached a deal with ESPN, which will increase revenue and reshape the postseason schedule. Sports Illustrated quoted analysts warning that the larger playoff could push major programs toward independence and raised concerns about player health and conference matchups. USA Today reported that Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman supported the 24-team format, while CBS Sports conveyed former Alabama coach Nick Saban’s view that a 16-team field would be preferable.
