College Football Playoff Deal Reached to Expand Field to 24 Teams
College football leaders in the United States reached a deal with ESPN to expand the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, adding revenue and reshaping the postseason format and schedule. According to CBS Sports, the expansion would introduce a “19+4+1” format for the 2027 season. 247Sports said the larger field could broaden recruiting narratives for programs nationwide.
Fox News reported that the NCAA’s plan sparked debate over regular-season scheduling, player health and conference matchups. CBS Sports quoted former Alabama coach Nick Saban, who argued that a 16-team field would be a better compromise.
