Tensions Escalate Between Troy Aikman and ESPN Over MNF Role
NBC Sports reported on 17 October that tensions have risen between Troy Aikman and ESPN over his role on Night Football, noting the dispute during the network's Super Bowl broadcast from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Earlier reports from Front Office Sports and NBC Sports described friction between Aikman and co-host Joe Buck as Buck secured a new multi-year deal while Aikman's contract remained unsettled. Aikman later said he would finish the season as a free agent and consider future opportunities after his ESPN agreement expires, a stance echoed by Yahoo Sports and The Guardian, which said his contract would end after the Super Bowl.
NBC Sports added that Aikman sensed ESPN was moving in a different direction as his deal lapses in March, and Awful Announcing highlighted that the dispute cast uncertainty on the Buck-Aikman announcing team for the Super Bowl. Fox News reported that ESPN had not yet begun contract talks, with Aikman's deal running through 2027, and NBC Sports noted his at-will consulting work for the Miami Dolphins could affect his chances of securing a high-pay broadcasting contract after his current deal ends in 2026.
