Man shot during ICE operation in Manhattan’s Marble Hill neighborhood

Résumé

A man was wounded by an ICE agent’s gunfire during a federal enforcement action in Marble Hill, Manhattan, while a child in the vehicle was unharmed.

A man inside a vehicle was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a targeted enforcement operation in the Marble Hill section of Manhattan shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday. Police said a child, believed to be about five years old, was in the back seat but was not injured. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains conscious and under medical care.

According to ICE, agents were attempting to detain a suspect linked to a July 2025 shooting of an off-duty customs officer in Fort Washington Park. The agency described the operation as aimed at arresting a Dominican national with prior convictions for grand larceny, assault, robbery, drug and weapons offenses. ICE confirmed that an officer discharged his weapon, injuring the man.

The New York Police Department stated that its officers were not present at the scene and did not participate in the shooting. City officials have noted that ICE has been using a nearby Target parking lot as a staging area for operations.

Congressman Adriano Espaillat, speaking at a press conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, said he had spoken with the victim’s family, who confirmed the child remains in their custody, and added that ICE agents did not permit him to see the injured man in the hospital.

Local leaders responded to the incident. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he would contact the president and urged an end to ICE activities in the city. Governor Kathy Hochul called for a “full and transparent accounting” of the shooting from federal authorities. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams expressed solidarity with the Marble Hill community, and Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, described the incident as evidence of “unchecked, rampant violence” by ICE.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a rapid influx of police and ICE personnel in the area following the discharge of fire.
