Michael Douglas Discusses 2013 Separation from Catherine Zeta-Jones While Promoting Memoir

Summary

The actor said his 2013 break from his wife was mutual and that they reconciled by early 2014, as detailed in his new memoir.

Michael Douglas said his brief separation from wife Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2013 was a mutual decision and that the couple reunited by April 2014. While promoting his memoir One Helluva Ride, Douglas told The Sunday Times that he never gave up hope of reconciliation and that “marriage is a lot of work.”

He added that the couple’s difficulties were compounded by his battle with tongue cancer and Zeta-Jones’s bipolar diagnosis, which contributed to the August 2013 “take a break.”

Douglas also clarified a passage in his book about ending other relationships before committing to Zeta-Jones, noting that she insisted on monogamy and that he subsequently cut off those contacts.

The memoir has also drawn attention for Douglas’s disclosure of a past romance with co-star Kathleen Turner during the filming of Romancing the Stone in the 1980s. Turner responded to the coverage, saying she “looks forward to enjoying the book.”
