Michael Douglas Discusses Keys to His Marriage with Catherine Zeta-Jones
Actor Michael Douglas said humor, communication and empathy have helped sustain his marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones, noting lessons learned during a brief separation.
Actor Michael Douglas told People that a good sense of humor, open communication and trying to see things from his partner’s perspective have been central to his long-term marriage with Catherine Zeta-Jones. He said they avoid absolute language such as “never” or “always” during arguments and strive to discuss uncomfortable topics. Douglas recalled that after a brief separation in 2013-14, communication was the factor that led them to reconcile, adding that both parties made the decision mutually and never lost their love for each other. He also mentioned that he first became interested in Zeta-Jones after seeing an early screening of her 1998 film "The Mask of Zorro" and that they later met again at a film festival in France. The couple, married since November 2000, have two adult children who are both actors.
