The New York Giants are evaluating rookie quarterback J. J. McCarthy’s readiness to serve as the backup to Jameis Winston ahead of the team’s game, the New York Post reported. The Giants obtained McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in early September, sending a 2027 fifth-round pick in exchange for the former No.  10 overall 2024 draft selection, a move described by Yahoo Sports as a low-cost, scheme-fit acquisition.

Minnesota released the quarterback after ten starts, nbcsports. com reported. The trade was intended to add depth after rookie Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, leaving Winston as the starter and McCarthy as the backup, CBS Sports noted. Sports Illustrated said the Giants were concerned about McCarthy’s durability and consistency.
