Boeing identifies software flaw in 737 MAX that can disable automated landing guidance

Resumen

Boeing disclosed a software defect in the 737 MAX that may prevent the aircraft’s automated navigation system from functioning during a specific landing scenario, and the FAA is reviewing the issue.

Boeing has reported a software defect in the flight-control computers of some 737 MAX jets that can disable an automated navigation feature when pilots change their flight path after a missed approach. The problem stems from a recent cockpit software update and may leave pilots without automated guidance during that landing phase.

The manufacturer said it notified all operators of the aircraft last month and reiterated existing pilot procedures for handling the situation. > "We shared information with operators that reinforced existing pilot procedures for safely handling such cases. Our engineers are working on a software update to permanently address the issue," Boeing said in an emailed statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it is aware of the potential issue and is working closely with Boeing and airlines. > "The FAA will convene a Corrective Action Review Board and will take immediate action if it identifies a safety concern," the agency said.

The number of aircraft currently operating with the flawed software has not been disclosed. Boeing, airlines and regulators are assessing the scope of the problem and its impact on flight safety.
