Boeing says software flaw could disable automated guidance on some 737 MAX jets

Summary

Boeing has identified a software defect that may prevent pilots from accessing automated flight guidance during certain landing procedures, and is developing an update while regulators review the issue.

Boeing announced that a software defect in some 737 MAX aircraft can cause the loss of automated flight-guidance during a specific landing scenario, such as after a missed approach when the flight path is altered. The company said it notified all operators of the 737 MAX about the issue last month and has provided guidance to reinforce existing pilot procedures while a permanent software fix is being developed.

"Last month, we informed all 737 operators about a software issue where pilots may not have access to automated flight guidance during a specific landing scenario. We shared information with operators that reinforced existing pilot procedures for safely handling such cases. Our engineers are working on a software update to permanently address the issue," Boeing said. The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing the problem to determine if additional actions are required. Some airlines have indicated they do not wish to receive new 737 MAX deliveries that contain the flawed software.
