Former 'American Idol' Contestant Caleb Flynn Faces Murder Trial Over Wife's Death
Caleb Flynn, a former contestant on 'American Idol,' is on trial for the alleged murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, with prosecutors citing extensive text messages suggesting premeditation.
Caleb Flynn, who appeared on "American Idol," is being tried on charges of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors presented evidence that includes more than 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and a mistress in the year preceding the February 16 killing. They said a message from Flynn indicated he stayed up until early morning "trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail," and that he would kill Ashley "in a heartbeat" if he could avoid moral consequences.
The night before the homicide, prosecutors claim Flynn sent a text to his mistress stating, "I choose you. I'm free," followed by a note that actions would occur the next day. According to the indictment, Ashley was shot twice in the back of the head while lying in bed, and the scene was allegedly staged to resemble a break-in.
Flynn called 911 after the shooting, reporting a break-in, and body-camera footage later showed him visibly upset at the scene. The defense argues that no direct or forensic evidence links Flynn to the crime and contends that investigators focused on him after uncovering the alleged affair. Flynn has entered a not-guilty plea, and prosecutors say the couple's young daughters, who were present in the home, are expected to testify.
"We have a substantial amount of digital evidence that demonstrates a clear intent to harm," a prosecutor said during opening statements.
The trial continues as both sides present their arguments.
