Former "American Idol" Contestant Convicted of Wife's Murder in Ohio
A jury in Troy, Ohio, found former singer Caleb Flynn guilty on nine counts, including murder, for the February killing of his wife. Sentencing is set for Oct. 5.
A Miami County jury deliberated for just over two hours before convicting former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn on all nine charges, including murder, assault and tampering with evidence, in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, at their Tipp City home in February. The verdict was read by Judge Jeannine Pratt, after which Flynn was taken into custody in handcuffs.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Flynn fabricated a home-invasion story, claiming an intruder shot his wife, while electronic data placed him awake and moving in the hours before the killing. Assistant prosecuting attorney Matthew C. Joseph said the defendant’s account was "a complete fabrication" and that the motive appeared to be keeping his mistress and children.
Testimony included text messages between Flynn and a woman who identified herself as a former church intern, indicating that Flynn expressed hostility toward his wife and discussed wanting her dead. The defense did not call any witnesses.
Flynn, 40, previously performed on "American Idol" in 2013, faces a potential life sentence without parole at a sentencing hearing scheduled for Oct. 5.
