Toys 'R' Us to add 120 standalone stores in the United States

Resumen

The toy retailer plans to increase its U.S. footprint from 40 to 160 standalone locations, with new stores slated to open during the upcoming holiday period.

Toys 'R' Us announced on Sept. 17 that it will open 120 additional standalone stores across the United States, raising the total number of such locations to 160. The company has not disclosed the specific sites or exact opening dates, but said the expansion will give shoppers more options for toys, collectibles and gifts ahead of the holiday season.

The new stores will stock products from major brands such as LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Pokémon and others, and some will include candy shops and cafés. Select locations will also feature "Creator Studios," designated areas where influencers, content creators and toy manufacturers can produce videos, unveil products and host events. The retailer plans to launch Creator Studios initially at five existing stores in New Jersey, Minnesota, California, Colorado and Illinois.

Toys 'R' Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 and liquidated its U.S. operations the following year. After being acquired by WHP Global in 2021, the brand reopened a flagship store in New Jersey and began expanding through partnerships with Macy's, Go! Retail Group and other venues such as Navy Exchange locations and airports. The company now operates roughly 400 shop-in-shop locations inside Macy's stores, alongside its standalone outlets and international presence.
