Iceland summons U.S. ambassador after Trump shares map depicting island under American flag

Resumen

Iceland's foreign ministry called in the newly appointed U.S. ambassador after President Trump posted a map on Truth Social showing Iceland and other regions covered by the U.S. flag, deeming the post inappropriate.

Iceland’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. ambassador Billy Long on Monday following a social-media post by President Donald Trump that displayed a map with the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean overlaid by the American flag and labeled “United States of America.”

The image was shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform without any accompanying explanation. Iceland’s foreign minister, Þórgerður Gunnarsdóttir, said the posting was “completely inappropriate,” according to the ministry’s statement to local broadcaster RÚV.

The U.S. State Department, as well as American diplomatic missions in Copenhagen, Reykjavik and Nuuk, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and the Icelandic ministry also declined further comment.

Trump’s previous remarks about acquiring Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, have previously strained relations between the United States and NATO allies in Europe. The map appeared hours after the European Commission announced a €200 million investment in Greenland during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated Greenland’s position, stating that the Greenlandic government and people have repeatedly expressed that they do not want to become part of the United States.
