Summary

Iceland's foreign minister called President Trump's social-media map depicting Iceland and other regions under the U.S. flag unacceptable and summoned the U.S. ambassador for clarification.

Iceland lodged a diplomatic protest after President Donald Trump posted a map on his Truth Social platform that placed Iceland, Greenland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean beneath the United States flag. The foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long to convey Iceland’s objection.

"It is absolutely clear that this is a fundamental principle. In my view, this is not a joke, and if it is meant to be a joke, it is a very poor one," Foreign Minister Þórgerður Gunnarsdóttir told reporters, emphasizing that Iceland stands with Greenland against any annexation claims.

The posting followed earlier remarks by Trump suggesting that the U.S. state of New Mexico be renamed "New America." The White House did not respond to requests for comment. Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, and has occasionally confused Greenland with Iceland in public statements.
