TSA reinstates gate access for select PreCheck members without tickets

Resumen

The Transportation Security Administration will let eligible TSA PreCheck members without boarding passes pass through security and enter gate areas at 13 airports, reviving a practice halted after the 9/11 attacks.

The Transportation Security Administration announced that eligible TSA PreCheck members can now clear security and enter gate areas without holding a boarding pass, a privilege that was largely eliminated after the September 11 attacks. The new "Gateside by TSA PreCheck" program is being rolled out at 13 airports, including Los Angeles International, Dallas-Fort Worth International, Harry Reid International in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City International, with plans for further expansion.

Participants must apply online one to three days before their intended visit and receive approval before arriving at the airport. Once approved, they may use a TSA PreCheck lane with a valid form of identification. Passes are valid for a single calendar day and allow multiple entries during that period. Members of other trusted-traveler programs who possess a Known Traveler Number are also eligible to apply.

"As an exclusive benefit for our most trusted travelers, this new program makes it easier to return to the gate for welcomes and send-offs, meet friends during a layover, and enjoy dining and shopping along the way," the agency said on its website.

Before 9/11, friends and relatives could accompany ticketed passengers to the gate, but post-attack security measures restricted access to secure airport areas.
