Umpire apologizes after cap dispute leads to manager ejection
On 8 September, home-plate umpire Doug Eddings apologized after pausing the game at Coors Field to tell rookie reliever Hancel Rincon to straighten his cap, an incident that had earlier resulted in manager Oliver Marmol’s ejection. Eddings said the apology was intended to clear up the misunderstanding. The dispute began on 4 September when the Cardinals faced the Rockies. Eddings instructed Rincon, making his debut, to adjust his hat; Marmol confronted the umpire and was thrown out.
Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman later said he never commented on the cap, and players from both teams briefly tipped their caps in protest. St. Louis rallied and secured a 7-6 victory.
