Three killed, including suspect, in downtown Minneapolis apartment shooting

Resumen

A gunfight at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building left three dead, including the shooter, and injured at least six people, among them two police officers.

A shooting inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon resulted in three fatalities, including the suspected gunman, and injured at least six people, police said. The incident began around 4:36 p.m. after a 911 call reported a person shot at 15 E. Grant St., and quickly escalated to an active-shooter situation, interim police chief Bill Peterson told reporters.

Officers who entered the high-rise encountered gunfire and a haze that limited visibility. They pursued the sound to an upper floor, where the suspect exchanged fire with them before being killed, though the exact cause of his death was not immediately known. Peterson said the department was familiar with the individual.

Five civilians were wounded by gunfire, and a sixth person, a police officer, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two officers were shot—one in the leg and another twice in the abdomen—while a third officer was injured in a different manner; all three are in stable condition, according to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Mayor Jacob Frey praised the officers for their actions, saying they helped evacuate residents and transport the injured while under fire. State Governor Tim Walz expressed relief that the injured officers are expected to recover and thanked first responders. The FBI and ATF were also on scene, with FBI Director Kash Patel offering agency resources to local authorities.

Witnesses described hearing multiple rounds, with some estimating 20 to 30 shots. One resident said he recognized the shooter as a known resident who often displayed a weapon, while another reported seeing several people shot in the lobby. The city advised residents to avoid the surrounding multiblock area, later confirming the zone was secure.
