Jury Remains Deadlocked in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial After Judge Issues Final Instruction

Résumé

The jury in the Lindsay Clancy case reported another deadlock, prompting a judge to deliver a final “dynamite” instruction before adjourning the deliberations until Thursday.

A jury in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial told Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan it could not reach a unanimous verdict for a second consecutive day, extending deliberations beyond 28 hours. The panel, consisting of nine women and three men, was sent home after the judge delivered a final “dynamite” instruction, a rare last-resort directive used in Massachusetts to encourage a decision.

Judge Sullivan thanked jurors for their time before dismissing them, and the jury is scheduled to reconvene Thursday morning. The case, which began last Thursday, involves charges of first-degree murder for the deaths of Clancy’s three children in Duxbury in January 2023. Jurors may return a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, not guilty, first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter; a hung jury could lead to a mistrial.

Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, argues she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors maintain she planned and knowingly carried out the killings.

During the proceedings, a 56-year-old woman, Dawn Light, was arrested for allegedly filming jurors as they exited the courthouse. She pleaded not guilty to intimidation of jurors and was released on her own recognizance pending a future court date.

Legal analysts noted the uncertainty inside the jury room, suggesting the deadlock could involve differing views on insanity defenses or charge levels. The trial will continue after the brief adjournment.
