Michigan links iceberg lettuce and Taco Bell to massive cyclosporiasis outbreak
Michigan health officials said an interim report linked consumption of iceberg lettuce, particularly at Taco Bell, to the state's largest cyclosporiasis outbreak, which has resulted in more than 14,000 cases across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier reported over 17,000 confirmed Cyclospora infections in 48 states and Washington, DC, while the Food and Drug Administration added Georgia, Tennessee and Texas to the list of affected states, bringing the total to 11,458 cases in 20 states. The FDA also announced that the recalled lettuce had been removed from stores, and public-health experts have attributed the summer surge in foodborne illnesses to warmer temperatures, a globalized food supply and reduced federal safety staffing.
