Construction workers discover €9 million in gold during renovation in Dendermonde
Eight workers uncovered gold coins and bars worth about €9 million while renovating a building in Dendermonde, prompting a police investigation into ownership and origin.
Eight construction workers in Dendermonde, Belgium, found gold coins and bars valued at roughly €9 million ($10.5 million) during a renovation project, authorities said. The discovery occurred when a drill bit became lodged and struck a gold bar, according to Patrick Feys, chief of the Dendermonde police district, who told Belgian broadcaster VTM. The workers informed the property owner, who then contacted police. The gold was inventoried under camera surveillance at the police station and subsequently sealed to prevent disputes. Police posted images showing a metal bucket filled with coins and a table covered in bars. An investigation is ongoing to determine how the gold was placed at the site and who holds legal ownership. > "I hope they can use it to fund a worthy cause, though that will be determined by further investigation and legal proceedings," Feys added.
