Builders Find €9 Million Gold Cache in Belgian Home Renovation

Resumen

Construction workers in east Flanders uncovered a sealed stash of gold bars and coins worth about €9 million while drilling a cellar, prompting a police investigation and a claim process under Belgian law.

Construction crews renovating a house in east Flanders discovered a concealed collection of gold bars and coins estimated at €9 million when they were drilling to install new sewage pipes. The find was reported to police, and the gold was moved to a secure location while authorities investigate its origin.

The site, owned by the welfare charity CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, is now the subject of a legal claim process. Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to come forward; if no claim is made, the treasure may be divided between the finder and the property owner, provided it is not linked to criminal activity.

"At first I thought they were €1 coins. But then we also saw a gold nugget lying there. That's when we realised it was something bigger," said one of the workers.

"There are so many coins and bars – it would be almost impossible," site manager Mario told a local broadcaster.

"My first reaction was surprise and amazement, and I hope the treasure can eventually support our charity's work," said Geert Hillaert, director of CAW Oost-Vlaanderen.

Police have warned the public against visiting the active construction site in search of additional treasure and expressed hope that the discovery will be handled appropriately.
