Catcher Adley Rutschman records two-run double in first Triple-A rehab game for Red Sox

Resumen

Adley Rutschman made his Red Sox debut in a Triple-A rehab start, throwing out a runner and hitting a two-run double, as the team assesses his readiness for the major-league roster.

Adley Rutschman appeared in his first game for the Red Sox organization on Saturday, beginning a minor-league rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A Worcester team five days after being acquired from the Orioles. The three-time All-Star catcher returned from left-wrist inflammation, his first action since July 18, and caught five innings before being removed from the game.

Rutschman demonstrated defensive skill early, throwing out Lehigh Valley’s Colby Thomas at second base in the first inning. At the plate he delivered a two-run double, added two walks and scored twice.

The Red Sox expect him to serve as designated hitter for Worcester on Sunday, after which they will decide whether additional minor-league time is needed or if he will join the major-league squad for a four-game series beginning Monday night.

"When you're talking about a player of his caliber and how long he's been around, I think he knows his body," Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said. "And then you also trust the medical staff. When he comes back, it's not like he's going to run back there and catch five days in a row. So that'll all be factored in."
