Red Sox acquire catcher Adley Rutschman from Orioles

Resumen

Boston traded catcher Carlos Narváez, two top pitching prospects, a outfielder and cash for Adley Rutschman, aiming to improve its offensive production behind the plate.

Boston has completed a trade with Baltimore, sending catcher Carlos Narváez, pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, High-A outfielder Enddy Azocar and a player to be named later or cash considerations to acquire catcher Adley Rutschman, catcher Jake Rogers and cash. Rutschman, 28, is batting .251 with a .764 OPS and eight home runs this season and is expected to add power to the Red Sox lineup. His swing produces a high fly-ball rate, which Boston hopes to exploit at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox’s catcher group posted a combined .219 batting average, .615 OPS and only four homers, the lowest total in the majors, prompting the move. Rutschman, a two-time All-Star and top-five fWAR catcher this year, has been a key part of the Orioles’ roster but is entering his final year of arbitration and will become a free agent after the 2027 season.

The Orioles receive Narváez, who hit .187 with a .535 OPS this year, the two pitching prospects—Eyanson, a No. 47 prospect who posted a 1.69 ERA in Double-A, and Witherspoon, a former first-round pick with a 4.78 ERA in High-A—and Azocar, a 19-year-old outfielder hitting .286 with an .880 OPS. The trade gives Boston a potential upgrade at catcher while Baltimore adds depth and future talent.

Rutschman has been on the injured list with left-wrist inflammation since mid-July but is expected to return soon, and Boston may look to extend his contract given the assets exchanged for his services.
