Chiefs training camp sees rookie cornerback debut and injury updates

Resumen

Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 training camp opened at Missouri Western State University, featuring rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane's first practice and injury reports on defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott and tight end John Michael Gyllenborg.

Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 training camp began at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, with rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane participating in his first practice session. Delane, the team's first-round pick, wore a non-contact jersey as a precaution after missing the mandatory minicamp due to a shoulder injury. During 7-on-7 drills he worked both cornerback positions, highlighted by a coverage play against undrafted rookie receiver Jeff Caldwell, though he also acknowledged early mistakes.

"The first day is always ups and downs," Delane said. "If I lose reps, it motivates me to get better."

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo indicated Delane will be a primary focus as the Chiefs look to replace former starter Trent McDuffie, who was traded to the Los Angeles Rams. Delane expressed confidence in competing for a starting role.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with receiver Jimmy Holiday for a 20-yard touchdown during a red-zone drill, with Delane in man coverage.

"[He's] as advertised," Delane said of Mahomes, describing him as a great quarterback.

The camp also reported injuries: defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (right knee) and tight end John Michael Gyllenborg (sprained knee) were placed on the physically unable to perform list. Head coach Andy Reid noted the need for continued strength work for Norman-Lott, a 2025 second-round pick.

"Big guys with ACLs, it takes a little bit of time to get them back and fully strengthened up and ready to go," Reid said.
