Chiefs training camp highlights: Mahomes cleared, Delane cautious, Bieniemy vocal, Allen gains reps
Patrick Mahomes participated fully in the first two Chiefs practices, while rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane eased into camp, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was notably vocal, and wide receiver Cyrus Allen received increased targets.
The Kansas City Chiefs held two practice sessions over the weekend that featured rookies, quarterbacks and a handful of veterans before the full roster arrives at Missouri Western State University on Tuesday. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes was cleared to practice, and video from the sessions showed him moving out of the shotgun and completing passes while wearing a brace he used in college. Mahomes took part in all individual and 7-on-7 drills, delivering several throws that reached the end zone, including a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Jimmy Holiday.
No. 6 overall draft pick cornerback Mansoor Delane, who missed earlier offseason work due to a shoulder injury, appeared in limited snaps wearing a non-contact uniform. He said missing repetitions motivates him to improve and that he views the reduced workload as an opportunity for growth.
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to the staff and was described as “vocal” during the 7-on-7 drills, actively coaching skill-position players with consistent energy, a contrast to the previous season’s approach.
With the primary receiver group not yet in camp, Mahomes targeted lesser-known players, and wide receiver Cyrus Allen was highlighted for a catch in traffic near the end zone. Allen also spent time in a one-on-one session with head coach Andy Reid to work on pre-snap awareness and route timing, positioning him as a contender for the No. 4 receiver role alongside Nikko Remigio and Jalen Royals.
