49ers coach Kyle Shanahan injured in July car crash, limited for training camp
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained a broken nose, hand, ribs, a concussion and multiple stitches in a July 14 car crash, leaving him limited for upcoming training camp but expected to return by the season opener.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a car accident near his Los Altos-area home on July 14. The crash, which occurred in Palo Alto near the Stanford Shopping Center, left him with a broken nose, hand, several ribs, a severe concussion and more than 40 stitches. The other driver, who was in an SUV, was not injured and police reports indicated that drugs or alcohol were not factors.
General manager John Lynch confirmed the injuries at the team’s training-camp opening press conference, noting that Shanahan is expected to be cleared for the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne on Sept. 10, though he will remain on concussion protocol until cleared. > "I think the expectation is that long before that [Week 1 vs. Rams], he’ll be better," Lynch said. > "But again, everybody responds to these things differently, and, you know, we’re going to do whatever it takes to have him right when he comes back."
The 49ers issued a statement saying Shanahan will "participate in team activities on a limited basis" as he recovers. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster, along with other coordinators, will assume some of Shanahan’s duties while the team begins practice on Sunday.
Lynch added that the organization’s culture and staff depth will help manage the situation, emphasizing a collective effort to keep the team on track.
