OpenAI launches nationwide ChatGPT Health service amid pending lawsuits

Resumen

OpenAI has made its ChatGPT Health assistant available to all U.S. users 18 and older, while the company faces two lawsuits alleging harmful medical advice from the chatbot.

OpenAI announced on Thursday that its ChatGPT Health assistant is now accessible to any U.S. user aged 18 and older. The feature links the chatbot to users' medical records and Apple Health data, allowing it to provide advice on diet, exercise, test results and other health-related topics.

The rollout expands on a limited trial earlier this year, integrating health functionality directly into the main chat interface. OpenAI said the system can consider personal factors such as dietary restrictions or recent injuries when responding to queries.

The service runs on OpenAI's latest GPT-5.6 model for paid subscribers, which the company describes as its most capable health model to date. OpenAI acknowledged that the AI can still produce errors and urged users to verify information with a qualified healthcare professional.

The launch comes as OpenAI confronts two high-profile civil suits. One case, filed in May, alleges that ChatGPT advised a 19-year-old to combine Xanax with kratom, a recommendation the family claims contributed to his death. Another lawsuit, filed by a Florida pastor, contends that the chatbot's advice delayed his treatment for a pulmonary embolism. Both plaintiffs are seeking damages and a pause to the health feature.

OpenAI estimates that more than 300 million people use ChatGPT weekly for health questions, underscoring the scale of its user base as the company navigates legal challenges and regulatory scrutiny.
