New Jersey glitch reveals 6,600 noncitizen registrations, spurs national scrutiny

Fox News reported that a review by New Jersey officials identified 6,600 ineligible registrations, adding to a 25-year record of non-citizen entries on voter rolls in multiple states, with only a few hundred alleged illegal votes. Governor Mikie Sherrill said a programming error at the state Department of Motor Vehicles mistakenly added the registrations, and the state began removing the names after determining that fewer than 400 of the listed individuals had cast ballots since 2023. The White House, according to ABC News, cited the error to urge Congress to pass the SAVE Act. New Jersey Republican Party chair Christine Hanlon, as reported by the New York Post, argued that the 6,600 registrations represented only a fraction of a larger problem.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, quoted by Fox News, said the governor was aware of the issue before publicly calling President Trump’s election claims false and warned that non-cooperation with the Justice Department could lead to lawsuits. Republican state lawmakers also called for a bipartisan investigation with subpoena power after reports that about 75,000 non-citizens were summoned for jury duty, Fox News said. A federal judge later denied the Justice Department’s request for the state’s unredacted voter registration list, finding Title III of the Civil Rights Act inapplicable, Fox News reported. Meanwhile, election officials in the affected states asked the Department of Homeland Security for details on its claim that more than 250,000 non-citizens were registered in four states, NPR noted.
